Funding Opportunities for Postdoctoral Scholars

Postdoctoral scholars can secure funding from fellowship programs or external granting agencies or may be offered funding from their faculty mentors’ grant or research resources.

Note that there are also External Scholarships Competitions coordinated by the School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies (SGPS) at Western- a list can be found here.

SGPS also hosts information sessions on several of these competitions.  



Fellowship Programs

There exist several fellowship programs offered to prospective and current postdoctoral scholars each year. Interested applicants are encouraged to review all application information to confirm their eligibility.

Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships Program / Programme de bourses postdoctorales Banting

The Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships program is jointly administered by Canada's three federal granting agencies: the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC).

Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR) - Junior Fellow Academy

In 2008, CIFAR established the Junior Fellow Academy as an elite fellowship program to build research and leadership capacity in gifted young scholars at a critical early stage of career development. Through the Junior Fellow Academy, CIFAR aims to build a closely connected and long-lasting community of exceptional young leaders who will help strengthen the Canadian foundations of advanced research.

The Government's objective in establishing the Canadian Post-Doctoral Research Fellowships (PDRF) is to attract recent Ph.D. graduates to do research in Canada. The Azrieli Fellows Program

The Azrieli Fellows Program promotes excellence in research and graduate studies at accredited institutions of higher learning in Israel. This prestigious and competitive program, established in 2007, provides financial support to the best and brightest scholars from Israel and around the world. These scholars use their training to become leaders in their respective fields and raise Israel's profile internationally, maintaining strong academic and professional links between Israel and the rest of the world.
